Area of responsibility: I oversee the day to day technical operation of the Stena Suezmax Tankers.
Education: Glasgow College of Nautical Studies - HND Mechanical Engineering,Unlimited Class 2 Certificate of Competency (Motor)Glasgow Caledonian University - BSc Civil Engineering.
Why did you choose this area?
I was always interested in ships and the sea having grown up on the coast. However, upon leaving school I chose to study Civil Engineering. Once I finished my degree, I quickly realized that this profession wasn’t for me and a friend suggested working at sea might be something to consider.
I soon landed a cadetship with Northern Marine and have not looked back since.
After gaining senior certification and having spent several years working at sea I felt like a change but still wanted to remain within the shipping industry.
I was fortunate enough to be offered a job in the office in Clydebank where I have progressed from Assistant Superintendent to Superintendent and for the last few years as Fleet Manager.
My time at sea and as Superintendent has given me the experience and knowledge for my current role.
How long have you been working with Stena?
What is the best thing with your job?
No two days are the same. Every day we have fresh challenges whether this is working through a technical issue with a ship or planning for a dry dock and there is a real sense of satisfaction once you find the solution.
Why would you recommend Stena as an employer?
Stena are a forward-thinking company who are not afraid to try new ideas and technologies which can make working life very interesting.
In addition to this they encourage employees to try to make a difference in their own working environment.
